28th-Dec-2009 06:52 am - The Lust List 2009

In contemplating compiling an end of the year recap post, it came to my attention that I've not posted a Lust List for over a year (Which I suppose gives you an idea of what a horrible year it's been). Rather than draw up a list of various things I liked this year, I'm instead combining the two: my top ten crushes for 2009. No commentary, just pictures, because that's what we're really here for anyway.

The Lust List 2009 )
this is the first in a series of ficlets written as part of [info]ontd_ai's charity drive in support of the houston area women's center, which provides support to survivors of domestic violence. terri sanvincente, aka [info]glitteraquarius, was a member of our comm and a houston resident who was brutally murdered by her ex-husband on christmas eve. we're fundraising in her memory here. please consider donating if you enjoy this piece.

Just happened to catch End of Time on BBC America.

...

SO NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THIS.

::brain cramp::

I have been so vastly unmotivated to do anything at all today, and by "anything at all," I really mean anything. I got up much earlier than normal and just sat around in the sun for a few hours and then went back to bed for a few more. I have things I need to do both online and off, but I simply don't feel like doing them. I'm not apathetic, I'm just enjoying the calm and quiet after the riot of the holiday, I suppose. In a few minutes, I'm going to get up and fold some laundry so that I don't come out of this day feeling completely useless.

For you, though, and the purpose of this post: a couple of Sherlock Holmes links for those interested.

- Some industrious soul has written up a quick and dirty account of the original canon along with notations for newbies and links to the ebooks.

- And there is, naturally, a kink meme.

Oh, bless.

I am in love. Again.

Robert Downey, Jr. is an absolutely pitch-perfect Holmes, which isn't something I much doubted him capable of (I had, in fact, remarked to Lacy at some point about his having the perfect attitude for the role), but was delighted to the point of being overwhelmed at seeing it in practice.

I must explain something, before I get any further into any assessment of the film: I love Sherlock Holmes. I really, genuinely do. My love for this character, it is tremendous, and almost entirely [info]lyricality's fault (I suppose some credit has to be given to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle). I don't have her knowledge of the canon, but once upon a time I was lucky enough to play an absolutely god-awful character of mine against her painfully good Holmes, and I've been thoroughly infatuated with the character ever since. I love this character for all of his myriad idiosyncrasies and faults, I really do. And he was absolute perfection in this film.

I assume there's a smallish Holmes/Watson fandom already, but if it doesn't motherfucking explode after this movie, then I'm going to be extremely disappointed. They were waaaaaaay beyond bromance, Watson was practically his wife. His awesome, kickass wife.

Also, after watching Criminal Minds last night and today, I've realized Holmes was pretty much the original profiler.

"Just so you know - you sound like a fortune cookie." [info]eudaimon, he made a joke! I feel I must note this every time.

Screw Christmas, it's [info]genjadeshade's birthday.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANGEL. Have some photoshop:

I feel like Christmas is losing its charm. I don't even know, I know I woke up this morning and it was just another day. Eh. Maybe I'm just being a Grinch and all I need is to go to my dad's friend's house for dinner and Christmas spirit. I am pretty hungry. We're going to see Sherlock Holmes later today, too, so that should be fun. I want to see Avatar badly, but Holmes with the family is good enough.

I finished Avatar: The Last Airbender last night, and in all seriousness, that finale was the best hour and a half of television I've watched in years. I think the last time I was so impressed and moved by TV, it was the Dexter season one finale.

Last night I started watching Criminal Minds. I was on 1x01 when flailing talking to [info]eudaimon about it, and when she went to bed, I told her I'd be somewhere around 1x10 when she woke up. I went to bed after watching 1x10 and I'm on 1x12 now. Crazy, crazy sauce. But good goddamn, Shemar Moore is all kinds of hot. I don't even know where to begin with that man.

What else? OH. While browsing Sephora yesterday at the mall, I found this Urban Decay 24/7 Eyeliner travel set that I've been eyeing for months. There was no display for it and it was the only one there, so I grabbed it up. SCORE. It was $29 for five eyeliners that, at normal length, are $18 a pop. \o/
Okay, y'all. According to this morning's poll, it's Donner beating Donder 38-7.

I am totally in the Donder camp. And now I have to go tell copilot that my flist are all on his side!! Fine, everyone. Be that way. Just don't come crying to me when you post your long, chaptered Prancer/Donner mega slash opus and ask why I didn't read it. :P

I really don't know why I'm so spammy of late. But I've been a busy little bee these last few days. And now, apparently I force you all to deal with it. (sorry)

copilot and I were listening to a song in the car and this conversation ensued:

kaalee: They sang it wrong -- it's [my correct version of donner/donder]
copilot: Oh, so you're in that camp, are you?
kaalee: Of course! That's how you spell it. Wait, you seriously think it's [the other, incorrect version of donner/donder]?
copilot: I don't think. I know.
kaalee: You're so full of crap.
copilot: Why do you even think it's that one?
copilot: *muses*
copilot: Is it a Maine thing?
kaalee: It's not a Maine thing; it's a being right thing!
copilot: I wonder if our marriage can survive this difference in spelling.

So, I said I'd ask my flist! Notice how I have not influenced you by sharing the right my spelling? See how impartial and scientific I can be! I shall present the results to him later on tonight. Unless, of course, you all vote for the one that I disagree with... then I shall deny I ever put a poll up on and distract him with other things.

Happy Holidays! *love* I hope you all have a glorious and magical end to this season and year and a wonderful new one. ♥

Taking a break. Liking how this is coming along.

OH LAWD IS DAT A STARFLEET CAPTAIN I SEE DERE )

I'm not as good as this guy (and also don't have Painter D:), but this tutorial was a big help in figuring out a set process. I definitely recommend it.

I kind of want to paint the Criminal Minds characters as Star Trek characters at some point.

true fact: i am every conservative's worst nightmare.
because if the government paid for my healthcare, i would quit my job, like, yesterday.

i don't really understand the whole aversion to cradle-to-the-grave social welfare.
i'd really like it if i could just focus on making rent and making enough to eat, getting piecemeal jobs and worrying about applications to graduate school. maybe freelancing.
possibly this (and only this?) makes me a pinko commie.

america i'm putting my queer shoulder to the wheel.
I've been adding more movies to my I Heart Movies collection tonight and Megan, bless her, gets to experience my random outbursts and epiphanies via IM. I'd mentioned that it was feeling like I'd seen every movie Robert Downey, Jr. has ever made enough times that she actually asked me if it was true. So, I checked.

32. I don't love the guy enough to have watched some of the really dubious movies he made in the Nineties when no one would give him work, but 32 movies. And that's naturally occurring in the wild! I sat through Chaplin in the theatre ALONE when I was 15 because I was all ZOMG U GAIZ RDJ IS A ~GENIUS~ AND THIS PROVES IT. It went completely over my head, but fuck if I would admit that at the time. XD

If you asked me who my favorite actor is, I wouldn't say RDJ, but shit, maybe he is. Heart and Souls three times in the theatre, people. God damn.

…and this is my Tony/Pepper song. IT'S A SIGN! OF…something. WinAmp KNOWS.

Babysitting will probably start a little after Christmas, and I might even get a car during the nights since I'll have to drive over to her house in the mornings. Good deal. Hearing that makes up for the fact that I left my cell phone in the glove compartment of my dad's work truck, so I have no phone, and couldn't catch up with Alex today to try to get out to see Avatar. :|

I love the bandwidth here so much. How much? Two seasons of Sons of Anarchy and one season of Criminal minds in a few hours, that's how much.

I'm also finally back to watching Avatar: The Last Airbender even though the episode in the desert made me want to put Aang in a serious time out. Sokka continues to be my absolute favorite. Jackson Rathbone, you are not fucking worthy. Well no, that entire movie isn't worthy, but Jackson most of all.

I wrote all that last night and totally forgot to post it. Anyway, added meme:

I would like to personally thank the country of Switzerland for creating Ricola cough drops. I realise that you are famous for some other things, Switzerland, like clocks and knives and not taking sides, but I think Ricola may be your most important export. Thank you for giving me something to suppress my cough that does not taste like ass.

I forgot to mention this in my last big post, but I have an I Love Movies account. I haven't had it very long, so my movie list is nowhere near complete, but I am slowly working through the list by year. Apparently I've seen over 500 of the new movies released since 2001. Anyway, if you have an account or create one, let me know? I'll friend you over there.

And now, an end of the year meme. )

Holy shit. Brittany Murphy.

I ventured forth into the wilds of suburbia today to claim our little parking space. There is now a stepladder in our empty spot, the same way there are chairs in all the others around planted by our neighbors. Fuck if anyone's taking the space my dad spent an hour shoveling to get his truck out!

...yes, that's the most exciting thing that's happened since Friday night. In two days I've only spent 30 seconds outside of the house. There's two feet of snow out there, you can't blame me. My dad and I were stuck in the house all day Saturday, surfing the web and watching TV/movies on our respective computers, while my sister was stuck at a friend's house, having been at a party while Mother Nature dumped two feet of snow on us. Today, we both cooked lunch at the same time -- me, noodles (like gourmet Ramen!) and him potstickers -- then headed back to our computers.

It's pretty easy to see where a lot of me comes from, I guess.

I spent the last 36 or so hours watching seasons three and four of Dexter. Season four was insaaaaaane. John Lithgow better win that Golden Globe, is all I'm saying. Also, I would do Desmond Harrington six ways from Sunday, bad fake Miami tan and all. I forgot just how much I love the show, and now I want to rewatch season one (which I still believe was one of the best seasons of TV I've ever watched).

[info]samworth_daily is having a picspam party, which is pleasing me to no end today.

Oh oh oh, oh my GOD, you guys, I showed this to [info]amberlynne last night when I found it, but I feel Amber would appreciate it if she weren't the only one I shared this horror hilarity with:

Poppin' Eric's Cherry One-Shot Contest. That would be Eric Northman, vampire hotass from True Blood. Oh yeah. You read that right.

It contains gems from dozens of stories, such as:

“Pamela, what are you doing?” Eric asked me in his fatherly manner.

And an AU where Sookie and Eric grow up together, containing this brilliant and moving scene:

A few days after Eric had turned four, he came to me carrying a little plastic container that he got from a vending machine. He handed it to me and then spoke in a nervous voice that could hardly be considered anything other than a squeak, “Open it, Sookie.”

Inside was the most beautiful ring I’d ever seen – it was pink plastic with a huge sparkly, iridescent jewel in the center that seemed to hold all the colors of the rainbow. I looked up at Eric and he bent down on one knee and said, “Will you come to McDonald’s and marry me?”

Ah, fandom. You complete me.

ETA:

[info]melloniel: Now I almost want to buy it just to say I own a vampire teeth ring
[info]bzzinglikeneon: XDDD
[info]bzzinglikeneon: Not to be confused with a vampire teething ring
[info]melloniel: And then one day I'll get into a brawl and punch some Twilight loving ho in the face
[info]melloniel: LOLLLL
[info]melloniel: And she can have vampire teeth imprinted on her FACE
[info]bzzinglikeneon: I love that you plan to have brawls in your future
[info]melloniel: XD
[info]bzzinglikeneon: Just randomly

» Coolest major ever? Well, it appears as though I am officially a Sun Devil. I have to call my advisor on Monday (Assuming she's there) and discuss exactly what classes I need to register for. It doesn't look like my transferred credits have been updated yet, but I'm able to register for new classes via the website, which is actually kind of cool. ASU uses a shopping cart system, which allows you to easily chose and sort what classes you want to take; AIO always just assigned me the classes I needed for my major. It looks like online classes don't start until January 19, but I am so fucking anxious to get back to school. Awesome-sounding courses for my major available in the upcoming semester include Race and Gender in American Film and Signs of Aliens, which is described as "Introduces semiotics and cultural studies; looks at various meanings ascribed to the sign of the alien." Nng, yes please. Motherfuck me, I love my major.

» Much love for my peeps. I think I forgot to say this before, but thank you very much to everyone who left me such nice comments in the Holiday Love Meme. You guys made me feel great. ♥

» I call it "Sterling Cooper." I have a new LJ layout, huzzah. I loved Matthew Goode (You know I did), but the old design was very spring (Not surprising since I'd had it since last spring), so I wanted to update the overall tone, as well as move to something even less fannish. I really love the new layout; it puts me in mind of mid-century modern design, which I've lately come to realise I have a serious passion for.

» "Do we own Target?" I have been revisiting the relative plethora of Tony/Pepper fic I've got saved to memories (10! That's more than any other pairing!), and I think that Tony and Pepper Go to Target is still my favorite. Don't get me wrong, there's some really good smut in some of those stories, but my favorites are the ones that highlight their natural dynamic rather than smother it with porn.

» Fucking delightful, I say. Oh! Speaking of awesome fic: I have lately taken to reading Pinto RPF, god help me. The majority of Pinto fic seems to paint Chris Pine as a huge lush and Zach Quinto as somehow simultaneously scarily exacting and tremendously flaming (Which ends up a lot like a very, very gay version of Sylar more concerned with hair product than superpowers), but the good ones eschew the whole based more on characters than the actual guys shtick and the GREAT ones are filled with tremendously funny banter. My favorite thus far is Bitch, PLEASE (Adult-ish), which was part of the kink meme, and was inspired by this macro. It is rare that I read fic at all, and even more rare that I foist a fic upon Megan if she isn't into the pairing, but I insisted she read this one. She declared it "fucking delightful" and compared it to that Holy Grail of all fanfic, DRP. You don't get a much better rec than that, people.
